In the electrolysis cell, the AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) separates cathode chamber from anode chamber. AEM selectively allows OH- to pass through while preventing the penetration of other substances. Metal sintered felt plays a key role in electrolysis hydrogen generation due to its high porosity, excellent chemical and thermal stability, and mechanical strength.

Nickel Sintered Felt
In the AEM electrolysis hydrogen generation technology, nickel sintered felt plays a key role on the cathode. Its functions in AEM water electrolysis hydrogen generation mainly include:
- Catalytic effect. Nickel sintered felt has excellent catalytic activity, and can promote the reduction reaction of hydrogen ions (H+) . During the electrolysis process, water molecules are decomposed into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. Nickel felt, as the cathode material, can catalyze the reduction of hydrogen ions, thereby producing pure hydrogen.
- Conductivity. Nickel sintered felt has good conductivity, and can effectively transfer electrons and ions. In AEM water electrolysis, nickel felt serves as the cathode material and provides a pathway for electron transfer, allowing electrons to flow from an external power source into the cathode and take part in the reduction reaction of H+.
- Surface area. Nickel sintered felt has a large surface area, which is crucial for electrolytic reactions. A larger surface area can provide more reaction sites, increase the contact area between hydrogen ions and nickel felt, thus improving reaction efficiency.
- Stability. Nickel sintered felt has good chemical stability. It can withstand high current density and reaction conditions during electrolysis, and maintain its catalytic activity and structural stability, thereby improving the durability and stability of the electrolytic reaction.

316L Stainless Steel Sintered Felt
316L stainless steel sintered felt, as an anode material, plays a crucial role in the AEM water electrolysis hydrogen production technology. 316L stainless steel sintered felt has been widely used in AEM water electrolysis hydrogen production technology, mainly in the following aspects:
- Corrosion resistance. 316L stainless steel sintered felt has excellent corrosion resistance, and can withstand the oxidizing environment and acidic conditions generated during water electrolysis, ensuring its long-term stability and service life during the electrolysis process.
- Thermal stability. Although the maximum operating temperature of stainless steel 316L is limited to 700 °C, it performs well within the operating temperature range of AEM electrolysis for hydrogen production, and is not easy to cause material failure or deformation.
- Mechanical strength. 316L stainless steel sintered felt has high wear resistance, and can withstand mechanical stress and friction during the electrolysis process, prolonging the service life of the anode material.
- Cost-effectiveness. Compared to other materials, stainless steel is more economical in terms of price. It is a recyclable material that reduces resource consumption and environmental impact through recycling and reprocessing.
